Your hair restoration journey

When you first start to notice hair loss, it can be the cause of embarrassment and anxiety. For men, loss usually starts with a receding hairline at the temples and thinning at the crown of the head. Although common, male pattern baldness can affect your confidence, relationships and career. But it is possible to do something about it.

Research

These days, most people use the internet to research treatments for hair loss. Information about the causes of baldness and surgical and non-surgical treatments is widely available, and there are many options including apparently low-cost surgeries on the continent. When choosing a clinician to consult about your hair loss, it is important to make sure they will listen to you and give you realistic advice about what you can expect to achieve with a restoration procedure.

Before your treatment

When you first contact us, it is likely that you will have a great many questions, concerns and perhaps anxieties about your hair loss and about the potential restoration procedures.

The truth is that hair restoration is a journey, and getting off to the right start is extremely important. During a face-to-face medical consultation with Dr Ball at our Hampshire coast clinic, we will listen to you and take the time to understand your particular situation and your goals.

If you decide to undertake a treatment with The Maitland Clinic, you are a medical patient under the care of Dr Ball and our nurse, Karen Cobb, not merely a paying customer.

Your medical consultation

Before recommending any particular course of treatment, Dr Ball  and our nurse will fully assess your medical history and your physical and psychological health and wellbeing. You can enter our clinic safe in the knowledge that you are receiving not just the best possible hair restoration treatment, but the best possible medical care.

During your medical consultation with Dr Ball, we’ll give you clear guidance on all of the options available to you, the pros and cons of each and the costs involved. We’ll also give you full information about the kind of result you can realistically expect to achieve.

Time to consider your options

We encourage you to take time to consider the information discussed during your consultation and to explore all options available to you. Following your consultation, a minimum “cooling off” period of 2 weeks is required before undergoing surgery.

For a detailed explanation of the consultation process at The Maitland Clinic, please see our blog on what to expect at a consultation.

Not everyone is a candidate for hair transplant surgery. You can learn more in our blog about who is a candidate for a hair transplant and what factors and medical conditions might exclude someone from undergoing hair transplant surgery.

Non-surgical treatment & assessment

If you are interested in exploring non-surgical hair loss treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), we arrange a thorough medical assessment and trichoscopic examination of your scalp by our specialist nurse, Karen Cobb RGN. This will provide you with a diagnosis for your hair loss condition and allow us to monitor your response to treatment.

Before proceeding with hair restoration surgery or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment, we will complete your medical assessment with a psychological questionnaire. This enables Dr Ball to ensure that a proposed treatment is appropriate for you as an individual and allows us to review the impact of the medical or surgical treatment on your psychological wellbeing.

Your treatment day

If you are having a hair restoration procedure, your treatment day will take place at our state-of-the-art clinic in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Discreetly located a short drive or train journey from London on the south coast. We can even arrange transport and accommodation for you to ensure maximum convenience and comfort.

Treatment day at The Maitland Clinic

Although our treatments are medical operations conducted in a theatre, we have made every effort provide an environment that is comfortable and pleasant. All of our procedures are conducted using tablet pain relieve and injections of local anaesthetic, which is similar to an injection at the dentist and should be the only discomfort you will feel throughout the process.

You will be awake but relaxed throughout the day, and able to watch movies or use a tablet computer while the procedure is taking place. We have made a treatment at The Maitland Clinic as comfortable as possible that a surgical procedure could be.

When the procedure is complete we will again assess you to ensure you are in full health and able to leave the clinic. We’ll provide you with all that you need to take care of your grafts, and full information on how to look after everything in the coming days and weeks.
